I've taken some flak for what people have seen as my comparing apples with oranges with respect to Isabel and Cristina. I think I've explained, ad nauseam, now, that the comparison is of the situation, not the person. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. But, yes, clearly, Eva Perón was not just anybody. No matter what anyone might think of her, she had extraordinary leadership capacity, intelligence and will, and was the true power behind the populist side of Perón's government. Perón, without Eva, couldn't hold the movement together as proven by his immediate decline after her death and the war that broke our between rival factions in his movement when he returned. The cases of Isabel and Cristina are just the opposite. Despite the differences in their relative capabilities, both were appendages of their husbands' empires. We know how that worked out for Isabel. It remains to be seen how it will for Cristina. For the sake of Argentina, we can only hope that the struggle to fill the power vacuum Kirchner leaves in his wake will not derail the country the way the orchestrated efforts of a virulent opposition deposed Fernando De la Rúa at the start of the decade. Your vision of the situation is, in my opinion, a clear one and I hope, too, for the sake of Argentina and its citizens, as you do, that Cristina Kirchner can find the backing to resist orchestrated power plays and keep the country on an even keel through the next elections. For that to happen will require that people in general and political players in particular put aside their own positions and ambitions for the good of democracy - utopian though that may sound.Dan Newlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12808659212364459371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3203081344028906101.post-43576631758352587882010-10-30T20:10:23.848-03:002010-10-30T20:10:23.848-03:00Hi Dan, I'm using a borrowed PC so must be bri...Hi Dan, I'm using a borrowed PC so must be brief.. I read your article with interest. Having lived thru' the 3 women's "reigns" (Evita, Isabel, Cristina), I'll commit the heresy of saying that the final part of Evita's is the only one that holds me in its grip. It was, in fact, her death that initiated Peron's decadence & downfall. Evita learned a lot during her short life and was entirely committed to her mission to help the poor in her final stages in this world. Perón listened to none of her advice, and left her in the lurch as she neared her deathbed. She was not an ignorant woman by the age of 33, like Cris who pretends to have a law degree..
Goodness knows what Cristina will do now. It doesn't seem to me that any sort of continuity is guaranteed, tho' by this I don't necessarily mean there will be a coup, as happened recently in Ecuador with the help of the CIA and failed...for now.
I believe Cristina has the chance to change course and do good, but maybe that's only wishful thinking. Does she have any brains and/or flexibility? Anarchy & chaos are more likely, which is another way of wrecking constitutionality..or continuity.
The only comment I would make is that Lopez Rega was not the founder of the Triple A. According to a senior SIDE [Argentine secret service]source I had at the time, Lopez Rega had a group of "pied noir" from Algeria who were his bodyguards, who would move around in green Fold Falcons and take responsibility for many of the Triple A's actions. This made the Triple A very angry and they once sent Lopez Rega the severed head of one of his bodyguards, as a warning to stop taking "credit" for the Triple A's killings. The Triple A was formed by [police chief] Arturo Villar and [trade unionist]Jose Ignacio Rucci, both later assassinated by Montoneros."Dan Newlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12808659212364459371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3203081344028906101.post-71654661778599145702010-10-29T15:34:48.968-03:002010-10-29T15:34:48.968-03:00Así es, Guille: He sowed the storms that we'll...Así es, Guille: He sowed the storms that we'll all harvest.Dan Newlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12808659212364459371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3203081344028906101.post-70080933798762780052010-10-29T14:16:18.089-03:002010-10-29T14:16:18.089-03:00(sigue de mi comentario anterior)
